Amid an increase in new cases, Prime Minister Modi will chair the COVID-19 Review Meeting today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to chair a meeting on the COVID situation on Sunday, as the country continues to experience a large increase in coronavirus cases. According to NDTV, PM Modi will convene the meeting today (January 9) at 4.30 p.m., according to sources. On December 24, Prime Minister Modi conducted a review meeting on the country's COVID situation, during which he emphasised the importance of vaccination and keeping "vigilant."

PM Modi's latest COVID review meeting update comes after India recorded 1,59,632 new coronavirus infections in a single day, the most in 224 days, according to data updated at 8 a.m. by the Union Health Ministry. India reported 1,65,553 infections in a single day on May 29 of last year. The number of active cases has risen to 5,90,611, the highest level in nearly 197 days.

Meanwhile, India has reported 552 new cases of Omicron, bringing the total number of infections to 3,623 across 27 states and UTs, according to the latest information from the union health ministry. 1,409 persons have moved or recovered from the overall number of Omicron cases. Maharashtra had the most cases with 1,009, followed by Delhi with 513, Karnataka with 441, Rajasthan with 373, Kerala with 333, and Gujarat with 204.

The total number of doses given out in the country as part of the statewide COVID-19 vaccination effort has surpassed 151.58 crore. On August 7, 2020, India's COVID-19 tally surpassed 20 lakh, followed by 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, and 50 lakh on September 16. It exceeded the 60 lakh level on September 28, the 70 lakh mark on October 11, the 80 lakh mark on October 29, the 90 lakh mark on November 20, and the one-crore mark on December 19.

On May 4, India passed the two-crore mark, and on June 23, it passed the three-crore mark. There are 242 new fatalities from Kerala and 19 from West Bengal among the 327 new fatalities. So far, 4,83,790 deaths have been reported across the country, with 1,41,627 deaths in Maharashtra, 49,547 deaths in Kerala, 38,366 deaths in Karnataka, 36,843 deaths in Tamil Nadu, 25,143 deaths in Delhi, 22,924 deaths in Uttar Pradesh, and 19,883 deaths in West Bengal.

More than 70% of the deaths, according to the ministry, were caused by comorbidities. "Our data are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that the state-by-state distribution of figures is still being verified and reconciled.
